RIP AFK Cafe 05/02/08.

You weren’t given enough time or the right people to stear you into the right direction. I will resirect you in the future in a different light. Where you’re allowed to grow and mature and make your own decisions without mela-drama and bulshit to follow.

To all those that believed: Sorry you had to go through this. Sometimes it’s takes failure to show the light.

To all those that helped: My gratitude probably means nothing. However, karma will return the favours and help you in your endeavours. Be sure of that. If you need someone to talk to about all this, I’m always here.

To all those that supported by eating/playing there: It’s going to sux for a while. However, We will find another spot to do these things. Watch this space and watch the facebook group also. Ideas are currently being floated.

The one thing everyone can learn from this, is be careful where you invest your time and with whom. Be honest in planning. It’s ok to make friends pay for things. There’s no free lunches in the world. Asking people to buy a cup of coffee to use wifi is ok. Simple.

I, myself have alot of challenges to work out given the closure as I also live with a number of key people and see a number of key people regularly.

The only I hope for now is the wisdom to make good decisions around my life and the ability to friends to trust my judgment and accept my decisions for good or bad once the dust settles.

To Javaira, Stay strong for you and Thomas and Pug. Life will get easier. I’m always here for a shoulder to cry on and infinite amount of support. You guys rock.

web fonts

Having to look at my own website more often is making me sick of standard web fonts (arial,times,courier). Maybe it’s that I’m spending more at advertising agencies that are quite liberal with fonts. Who knows… I’ve looked at embedded fonts but it seems like it’s more trouble that it’s worth.. And then there’s the cost to the end users. Extra 20-25k download on pages could be enough to some ppl the s**ts (yes I know spelling it like that it lame, however I don’t want to trip some admin’s proxy filter on swear words).

More shameless plugs… AFK Cafe is having it’s monthly Lock-in to which I will me running and working behind the counter. It’s going to be a full night of LAN games and console wars. Plus I get in intro the new coffee voucher also. ( mental note: must working on a poster for events). I have the 0000h to 0800h shift. Yay to me! Apologies for the crap coffee that may come out at 0400h my milk skills are still progressing.

Still looking more greener pastures for work (AFK is just a side project.). If you know anyone that’s looking for brilliant sysadmin send them a link to my resume. $50 buck and a bottle of something will be the reward.

Fink on OS X Servers.

Since OS X server doesn’t come with mrtg (which requires things like gd and the like) by default and the spamassassin is quite old, I’m going to trail fink on one server and macports on another and pitch them off against each other and see if there is one true leader.

I have to say I’m kinda swinging to Fink as it allow binary packaging which on servers is much more secure that installing compilers and the like. Another package manager to support.. How annoying.

Why is that fink requires X even to install a perl package… Seems Stupid.. Need more time to fingure this out. One hopes for a custom repo for corner situations and odd sofware. Might make patch management better on new installs.

Ipv6 On Printers

Went to a client’s office today to solve a printer problem ( Captain Obvious strikes again!) and discovered that Ricoh are now including ipv6 stacks in there C4500 printers. I almost fell of my chair when I saw this in the web interface. What makes this even better is that it also appeared on the printer GUI as well. I will post a screenshot tomorrow when I get back in the office.

Boss goes on holidays today, so I’ve decided (as acting boss) I’m going to make a dint into out debitor report by making phone calls and e-mail to specific ppl. I’m sure he will bitch at me but 20k is alot of money to have outstanding.

Other good news is that more applications for new jobs are going out this weekend. [insert shameless plug for AFK Cafe all nighter this Saturday] Working 0000h to 0800 h in Sunday should be alot of fun.

As a small IT consulting company it’s rare to here this phrase from SME businesses as they see this as a waste of time in unnecessary procedures. However, as more SME’s using multiple contractors (us and web monkey’s are quite common) this is becoming a much bigger issue. So much so I’m having to dedicate time to find or write a SME version of a change management policy. Yay for me. I feel so special. Can you feel the love today

If anyone has a CMP that’s concise and will fit SME level of thinking let me know. I hate re-inventing the wheel.

IPv6 Transit

Cross everything you have as I try secure ipv6 transit in Brisbane from NTT Australia. First thing todo 6to4 gateway then explore other ways to help. Believe it or not this is not driven by my linux/OSX need but to support Vista better.

If anyone else does dual stack or pure ipv6 transit to 127 creek street let me know. I’m seriously interested. And no I don’t have DC in Sydney or Melbourne.

Macenstein Mac chick of the Month..

With the amount of shopped photo’s out there and very good graphic artists it hard to see what’s fact and fiction. However this months Mac chick appears to be a down to earth girl, with flaws and faults. Good on her for that.. And pat on the back to the graphic artist for not being to much of a perfectionist to air-bush out every minute detail. Since some of us real blogs at work I wont embbed a picture but instead link to the article on macenstein and you can decide on how anally retentive your AUP is at work.
